Early Detection is Important – Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

The prostate is a male gland that is located underneath the bladder. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. It affects 1 in every 6 males in the United States. It is very important to understand the symptoms of prostate cancer because men often ignore the early signs like that of an enlarged prostate.

Symptoms to Detect Prostate Cancer

Let us first understand the symptoms associated with a benign enlarged prostate. Men suffering from an enlarged prostate would have:

  • trouble passing urine,
  • pain while urinating
  • blood in the urine
  • pain in lower back, thighs, and hips
  • weak flow of urine

  • increased need to urinate frequently
  • difficulty in the initiation of urination

  • feeling of a full bladder even though it is empty
  • bloody urine
  • painful ejaculation

Early Detection is Important

Doctors recommend that when the first symptoms of a prostate problem appear, you should go see a doctor. Very often men simply ignore the symptoms thinking that they have an enlarged prostate and do not go see their doctors. This mistake often proves fatal later on when the symptoms aggravate and the prostate cancer has spread to other organs. In 40 per cent of the cases, prostate cancer is diagnosed in the late stages.

Men above the age of 50 years should have a yearly physical exam. However, African American men and men who have a family history of the disease should begin testing at 40. Doctors might carry out an ultrasound, CT Scan, MRI Scan, or a biopsy to ascertain the presence of prostate cancer. Early detection is the key to surviving prostate cancer.

Treatments for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer treatments can vary depending on the stage of cancer. Some treatments may include surgical removal, radiation, chemotherapy, hormonal manipulation, or even a combination of these treatments together. Understanding the symptoms can really become the key to curing prostate cancer. It is also important to understand the genetic basis of this disease. Genes, which are chemical compounds located on the chromosomes, determine the characteristics of individuals.
